Save the Date! The 2017 Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft is coming!
The Curley Cattle Transport Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft is on again from 12th to 17th July 2017. Regarded as one of the greatest horse events in Australia, the Curry Challenge is an elite and prestigious event, drawing competitors from all states in to a fierce and thrilling competition. The event is held at the Cloncurry Equestrian Centre, Cloncurry QLD.
How the campdrafting competition works…
A rider on horseback must "cut out" one beast from the mob of cattle in the yard or the "camp" and block and turn the beast at least two or three times to prove to the judge that they have the beast under control. The rider then must take it out of the yard and through a course around pegs involving right and left hand turns in a figure eight, before guiding it through two pegs known as "the gate".
But that’s not all. There’s also the impressive Stockman’s Challenge competition…
Designed to mimic the day in the life of an average Australian stock rider, the challenge puts to the test the relationship and trust between a horse and its rider. Stockman’s Challenges are a unique Australian sport; designed to commemorate the Australian Stockman’s horsemanship skills. They are now a modern day tribute to the stockmen and women of years gone by; an acknowledgement of the skills required to work cattle in the bush. The event consists of a dry work pattern and a cattlework phase. The dry work pattern contains spins, sliding stops and roll-backs. The cattlework phase seeks to identify a horse that can easily control a beast and demonstrates his intended purpose of working cattle in the bush.
